How do I access the funds from a Bitvavo account of a deceased family member?

If you inherit the assets of a deceased customer, we have a procedure to transfer them in the easiest way. It is not possible to take over the account of the deceased, according to our terms, point 2.8. Contact us to inform us of the situation. One of our support staff will assist you during this process.

How to contact us?

You can email us at support@bitvavo.com. It is easiest if you provide the necessary documentation directly.

What documentation is required?

We kindly request the following documents/information:

  1. Death certificate;
  2. Will/probate statement;
  3. A photo of your passport or ID card;
  4. A photo of the passport or ID card of the deceased;
  5. Email address of the deceased;
  6. IBAN of the deceased.

If any documents are missing, please let us know. We will assist you as needed.

Are you unfamiliar with Bitvavo or crypto in general? We are here to help. We will answer all your questions and guide you through the process.

Note that the required documentation and processes may vary depending on your region, residence, and situation. If we need additional information, we will request it via email.

What happens after you submit the documentation?

After we have reviewed and approved the documentation, we will inform you if we have found an active account with any funds. These funds will be transferred to the (newly created) Bitvavo account of the heir. We advise you to create a new Bitvavo account directly and go through all verifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I name a beneficiary on my Bitvavo account?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to name a beneficiary in advance for the Bitvavo account.

How are the funds distributed if there are multiple heirs?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to split the funds among multiple heirs. The funds will be transferred to the first named heir.

When will I know the balance of the deceased person's account?

Given the volatility of the crypto market, we will notify you of the balance when we have closed the account and received all necessary information.

What if I, as an heir, do not want/cannot create a Bitvavo account?

We can potentially sell the deceased's assets and transfer the proceeds to the linked bank account. If the deceased's bank account is closed, it is possible to transfer the funds to the heir, notary, executor, or a trustee.

Once processed, you will receive an email summary of the account, confirming that the account has been closed and the balance transferred.
