How do I access the funds from a Bitvavo account of a deceased family member?

In the event that you become the owner of a deceased customer's funds, Bitvavo has a procedure for you to transfer them in the easiest way possible. The best thing you can do is contact our support team to inform us about the situation. One of our support staff will work with you throughout the process.

How do I contact Bitvavo?

You can email us at support@bitvavo.com to report a death. The easiest way is if you deliver the required documentation directly.

What documents do I need to provide?

We require the following documents:

  • Death certificate;
  • Will;
  • Valid identification of yourself;
  • Valid identification of the deceased family member.

Please let us know if any documents are missing so we can help you.

If you are unfamiliar with Bitvavo or digital currencies in general, we want to assure you that our staff is ready to assist you. We will answer all your questions and guide you through the process.

Please note that the required documentation and processes may vary depending on your region, place of residence and individual situation. If we need additional information, we will request it by e-mail.

What does Bitvavo do after I submit the documentation?

After we approve the documentation, we can transfer the funds. We do this in EUR to the linked bank account in the account.

In case the bank account of the deceased has already been closed, it is possible to transfer the funds to the heir, notary, executor or administrator. Unfortunately, it is not possible to split the funds between several heirs.

Once this has been processed, you will receive an asset overview of the account by e-mail and confirmation that the account has been closed and the balance transferred.

As the crypto market can be very volatile, we will only inform you of the balance once we have cancelled the account and received all the necessary information.

Can I name a beneficiary on my Bitvavo account?

Unfortunately, it is impossible to pre-nominate a beneficiary for the Bitvavo account.
