Confirmations when depositing crypto assets

Summary:
Your crypto deposit is credited to your Bitvavo account once it receives the required number of confirmations on its blockchain. Learn what confirmations mean, why they’re needed, how long they take, and what to do if your deposit is still awaiting processing.

What are confirmations?

In crypto, confirmations indicate how many blocks have been added to the blockchain since your transaction was included.
When your transaction is added to the blockchain, it receives its first confirmation. Each new block adds another confirmation. The more confirmations a transaction has, the more secure it becomes against potential reversals.

Why are there confirmation requirements?

Confirmation requirements help prevent double spending and ensure the transaction is securely verified. Bitvavo credits deposits only after the required number of confirmations is reached.
You can find the required number of confirmations per crypto asset on our networks page.

How long do confirmations take?

Each blockchain has its own block creation time, which affects how long confirmations take.

Example
On the Bitcoin blockchain, a new block is mined roughly every 10 minutes. Bitvavo credits Bitcoin deposits after 3 confirmations, which typically takes around 30 minutes. However, block times can vary. If miners take longer to find a block, the process can take more time.

Note: Confirmation times depend on blockchain activity and are outside of Bitvavo’s control.

What if my deposit shows as ‘awaiting processing’ even after enough confirmations?

Sometimes, a transaction may remain in awaiting processing even though it already has enough confirmations. This usually means that compliance or security checks are still being completed. These checks are a normal part of our process and often resolve automatically.

If your deposit has been in awaiting processing for more than 24 hours, request to speak to an employee.

Where can I see the confirmation requirements per crypto?

You can find a detailed overview of the required confirmations for each supported crypto asset on our networks page.
Some newer assets may be in trade-only mode, which means deposits and withdrawals are not yet available.

Note: Bitvavo cannot influence how fast transactions are confirmed on their respective blockchains. Confirmation speed depends on network conditions.

FAQ

How can I check how many confirmations my deposit has?

You can view the number of confirmations by checking your transaction on a blockchain explorer. Copy your transaction ID (TXID) from your Bitvavo account and paste it into the relevant explorer for that crypto network.

Why does Bitvavo need multiple confirmations?

Multiple confirmations ensure that your transaction is securely included in the blockchain and cannot be reversed. This protects both you and Bitvavo from double-spending risks.

My transaction has enough confirmations but is still not credited. What should I do?

Your deposit may remain in awaiting processing because it’s undergoing additional compliance checks. These checks usually complete automatically. If your deposit has been in awaiting processing for more than 24 hours, request to speak to an employee.

Can Bitvavo speed up the confirmation process?

No. Confirmation times depend on the blockchain network itself. Bitvavo cannot accelerate or delay this process.
