Do I need to re-verify my identity if I have a new passport or ID card?

Summary
In this article, you'll learn whether you need to go through the identity verification process again if your ID card, passport, or driver's license has expired or been renewed. We’ll also explain the one situation where new documents are required: if your residence permit has expired.

If your passport, ID card, or driver’s license expires or you’ve received a new one, you do not need to re-verify your identity on Bitvavo. Once your identity has been verified, you don’t need to upload new documents — even if your ID has expired.

The only exception is for users who registered with a residence permit. If your residence permit expires, we are legally required to ask you to upload a new, valid one. In this case, you'll receive a notification from us requesting the new document.

Note: Bitvavo will automatically notify you if new documents are needed. If you don’t receive a message from us, you don’t need to take any action.

When do I need to send new ID documents?

You only need to send a new document if you:

  • Verified your identity using a residence permit, and

  • That residence permit has expired.

In this case, you’ll receive an email from us requesting a new, valid residence permit.

When is re-verification not needed?

You do not need to send a new document if you:

  • Used a passport, ID card, or driver’s license for your original verification, even if it is expired now.

  • Recently received a new version of your passport or ID card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to verify my identity again if I receive a new passport?

No, as long as your identity was originally verified using a passport, ID card, or driver’s license, you don’t need to verify your identity again — even if the document has expired or you have a new one.

Why did I receive a message asking for a new document?

This usually happens when your original verification was done with a residence permit that has now expired. In this case, Bitvavo is required to ask for an updated version.

What if I don’t send a new residence permit?

If your residence permit is expired and you don’t upload a new one, your account access might be restricted. To avoid this, please upload the new permit as soon as you receive our request.

Can I proactively upload my new passport or ID?

This is not necessary unless Bitvavo asks for it. We only require updated documents when legally obligated — such as in the case of expired residence permits.
