Can I cancel a crypto withdrawal?
Summary
In this article, you’ll learn when a crypto withdrawal can still be canceled and what you can do if the withdrawal has already started. We explain what the different withdrawal statuses mean and what steps to take if you want to cancel a transaction.
When you request a crypto withdrawal from your Bitvavo account, it is usually processed automatically. In most cases, once a transaction has started, it cannot be reversed or stopped. However, if the transaction is still marked as "awaiting processing", there may be a short window of time in which our support team can help cancel the withdrawal.
When is cancellation still possible?
A crypto withdrawal can only be canceled if the status of the transaction is still "awaiting processing". This means it hasn’t been sent to the blockchain yet.
If this is the case:
- Contact our support team immediately and ask to speak to an employee
- Mention the asset, the withdrawal address, and the transaction amount.
- Our team will check if the withdrawal can still be stopped.
When is cancellation no longer possible?
Once the withdrawal has the status "processing" or "completed", it is already being sent to the blockchain or has been confirmed. At this point:
- Bitvavo cannot stop or reverse the transaction.
- We recommend contacting the receiving party (the owner of the wallet address) to see if they are willing to return the crypto asset.
Common statuses explained
| Status | Description |
|---|---|
| Awaiting processing | The withdrawal is waiting to be sent. Cancellation may still be possible. |
| Processing | The withdrawal has been sent to the blockchain. It cannot be canceled. |
| Completed | The withdrawal has been successfully processed on the blockchain. |
FAQ
What should I do if I sent crypto to the wrong address?
Unfortunately, Bitvavo cannot recover crypto sent to the wrong address. If you know the owner of the address, try contacting them to ask if they are willing to return the crypto asset. If the address is unknown, the crypto is likely lost.
Why can’t I cancel the transaction myself?
Crypto withdrawals are usually processed automatically and sent to the blockchain quickly. Because of this, you cannot cancel them yourself through your account. That’s why it’s important to contact support as soon as possible if the transaction is still "awaiting processing".
